If you are moving soon, there are a few things that you should do to your new home before you move all of your belongings in. If you can, try to set up an overlap period of at least a week where you have access to your new home before you need to move out of your old home. This will allow you to take care of important housekeeping matters before you move into your new home.

Set Up Your Utilities

The first thing you need to do is set up your utilities. Here are the most common utilities that you will need to set up:

  • Electric
  • Water
  • Gas
  • Sewer
  • Trash
  • Phone
  • Internet

For some of these, you may need to set up specific times for the utility companies to come out and set up these services. Giving yourself at least a week to set up these services allows you to take your time and not stress about getting everything up and running all in one day.

Change The Locks

The second thing you need to do is call a locksmith and arrange to have the locks changed on your new home. Even if the previous owner or tenant gave you a copy of their keys, that doesn't mean those are the only set of keys out there.

In order to ensure that you, your family, and your belongings are as safe as possible, it is best to change out the locks. That way, you know for sure that only you and your family have access to your new home.

Treat For Pests

The third thing you need to do is treat your home for pests. You don't want to move in and have to deal with ants or other pests. Call up a local pest control business and have them determine the risk of pests in your new home, and apply any necessary treatment methods. Often times, it is good to let your home air out for a day or two after it is treated for pest, which is why it helps to do this before you move into your new home.

Paint The Walls

Fourth, if you need to touch up on the paint in your new home, or if you want to add some accent walls, add in some time to paint your new home before you move in. To start with, you will not have to work around boxes and furniture. You will have a big open space to deal with. Additionally, painting your walls before you move in will give them time to dry before your house is full of items and people. You can also leave your windows open or run some fans to get rid of that new paint smell before you move in.

Install Organizational Systems

Fifth, if you want to add organizational systems to any of your closets, cabinets or storage areas in your home, take some time to get them in place and install them before you move in. You'll have more space to work with and will not have to move anything out of your way. Plus, when you actually move in, you'll be able to put everything away exactly where want it to go without having to find a second home until you have your organizational system set up.

Clean Everything

Finally, before you move into your new home, it is always a good idea to clean it. That way, when your belongings get there, all you have to worry about is unpacking your belongings.

If the carpet is dirty, you'll want to have it professionally cleaned before you move in. Make sure you give the carpet a few days to dry. If you have wood floors in your new home, now is the perfect time to have them buffed and waxed.

In addition to the big cleaning jobs, you'll also want to make sure that you wipe down all of the cabinets and drawers in your new home.

See if you can have access to your new home at least a week before your official move-in date, or arrange for your move-in and move-out period to overlap. This will give you time to really clean your new house and get it set up just how you want it before the moving trucks arrive with all of your belongings.
